Ive developed a concept for my cafe and now after testing my idea, its important to see how it might look in real cafe setting. I found a few images of cafe’s with a style similar to what I have envisioned and used photoshop to add my own creations and manipulate the size and perspective to fit this real setting, This gives me a real idea of what my cafe might look like and helps to think more ideas of items for my cafe to further my branding concept.
As Ive developed my cafe idea, I decided to look at colours used in my illustrated characters and pick out certain colours and then create colour pallets. This was a pretty successful activity and gave me a wide range of colours and shades from a single selection. Because my cafe is going to have some brightly coloured illustrations. Ive decided to keep any colour in my text really simple to contrast my illustration style.
I started by pulling the yellow from my Harry Potter inspired illustration and then just looked at variations of the colour selection. I did the same with each illustration and created a series of these colour pallets that I can use when creating new illustrations and collections.
After a really good tutorial with Emily I decided that my cafe was starting to look a little too busy with my patterned cup/wallpaper design and my colourful characters. It felt like the two styles were really disconnected so it would be important to now edit my development work and focus on one style or find a way to use the two together. I decided to spend a bit more time focussing on my illustrations and would o back to my patterns slightly later.
I considered how I could use these designs to create merchandise and use with in my brand, I really loved the merchandising of cafe’s such as the Cereal killer Cafe so so spent a bit of time looking at the way they merchandise products in their cafe, such as badges, fridge magnets, cook books, wallpaper, posters and t-shirts.
I decided that i would create some A5 cards, badges, Fridge magnets and tea towels / aprons as merchandise with in my cafe, and my colourful illustrations would work really well as I can isolate each illustration so would have a number of different designs which could be collected. To illustrate how I could package my badges, I created a card and badge design, using a bright blue background and confetti with the badges displayed in the centre.
I also created a series of cards based on my illustrations that could be packaged and sold separately or as a set.
My cafe for the future concept is based around literacy and reading. The National Literacy Trust UK found that 1 in 6 individuals in the UK struggle to read and write, a skill which could impact their future opportunities. The concept of my cafe is to have a space inspired by books, where individuals can step out of the hectic world and settle down with a book and a hot drink. I want to have different workshops in my space to help people of all ages improve their reading and writing. I also want my space to have authors and poets come in to talk about their work and help to inspire more individuals to pick up a pen and put their ideas on a page.
My Cafe is going to be a fun and exciting space inspired by the characters from famous books and quotes from writers and poets, a space to be inspired yourself. Ive started by looking at quotes and poems that reflect my cause and can inspire others.
These quotes are all really lovely and have helped to shape some of my ideas and help me to create a tag line to use with my own cafe, Jabberwocky. Ive chosen to use the tag line
Every adventure starts with a first sip!
This tagline really reflects my themes and ideas, My Cafe is based on reading and literacy, community and of course, food and drink! Stepping out of every day life for a moment and sitting back with a book and a drink, the stories with in the books are the adventure. This can also reflect the adventure of learning and improving a new skill such as literacy and writing. Literally starting a new journey or adventure filled with challenges and achievements. On another level my tag line is inspired by the quote from the Cheshire Cat in The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland “Every adventure requires a first step. Trite, but true, even here.” So this also has a real connection to the “Jabberwocky” name that I have chosen.
When I was growing up reading was (and still is) incredibly important, it’s a form of escapism, and taught me that through education, nothing is impossible. This is what I want other people to feel and I think this cafe could be a way doing it.
One of the key features of any business is a logo design, something that is recognisable, fun and conveys the themes of the business. My cafe is all about books, reading and improving literacy skills, whilst being in a warm, fun and bright environment. As I’ve explored logo designs for this Cafe / Social Enterprise I wanted it to have a direct link to the history of books and printed language so wanted to use letterpress to create some interesting designs.
Letterpress printing was the normal form of printing text from its invention by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century until the 19th century and remained in wide use for books and other uses until the second half of the 20th century. Letterpress printing remained the primary way to print and distribute information until the 20th century, when offset printing was developed, which largely supplanted its role in printing books and newspapers.
The history of letterpress and relief printing also relates back to my Cafe name ‘Jabberwocky’ as the first edition of ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ was printed in 1871 by Macmillan Publishers and would have been created by using letterpress and manually printing each page.
Letterpress printing is a technique of relief printing using a printing press, a process by which many copies are produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets or a continuous roll of paper. A worker composes and locks movable type into the “bed” of a press, inks it, and presses paper against it to transfer the ink from the type which creates an impression on the paper.
To start my logo design I chose a few different type faces and printed each one multiple times, first starting with the full name ‘Jabberwocky’. I then cut into each sheet and rearranged the type to form interesting designs. Through this process I decided that I would focus on just the letter ‘J’. I then scanned my designs and put them into photoshop to further experiment with the text and to create lots of different logo designs. I then chose my strongest designs and looked at the colours until I created some pieces I’m happy with.
After scanning my favourite design and experimenting with colours, I immediately noticed that the ‘J’ on the right was not as strong and clear a print as the ‘J’ on the left so decided to isolate the ‘J’ on the left and just use this print going forward.
I then created lots of different deigns so that I would have a lot to compare and contrast as I picked the strongest designs to experiment with further. Aiming to create one or two designs which I feel convey my concept and are fun, bright, recognisable. It is also very important that the designs can be used across different types of media.
These are my strongest designs from this test, so I will experiment with these further and then review them again and pick the strongest designs from these to use.
As my cafe concept centres around books, reading, literacy and education. I have chosen the name ‘Jabberwocky’.
This name is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Adventures of Alice Through the Looking Glass’ and the nonsense poem ‘Jabberwocky’. In the Book the poem is discovered by Alice in Looking Glass Land after she meets the Chess piece characters the White King and White Queen. Alice finds a book written in a seemingly unintelligible language. Realising that she is travelling through an inverted world, she recognises that the verses on the pages are written in mirror writing. She holds a mirror to one of the poems, and reads the reflected verse of “Jabberwocky”.
I like this name for a few reasons, firstly because for Alice in the book, she starts by not understanding the text at all and through her own exploration and learning discovers a way to read and understand it, much like people first learning to read.
Its also a name taken from one of the most famous and loved series of novels by Lewis Carroll and people tend to recognise the name even if they haven’t read the books, perhaps it could inspire people to want to pick the novel up and try it them selves. Finally ‘Jabberwocky’ is considered to be one of the best nonsense poems in the english language and from it we have taken neologisms like ‘Chortle’ and given them new meaning in our language today, it shows the ever changing landscape of the english language and that we are still adding new words to it, even now.
I want my cafe to be a warm and inviting space for people to step out of the hustle and bustle of everyday life and sit back with a book and hot drink. I also want this to be a space for education and for learning new skills together. When I imagine what this space might be I picture warm colours, cosy spaces and homely lighting and I’m really inspired by the autumn season natural colours of reds, oranges, yellows, browns and gold. I’ve collected some images that inspire me and will use these as I create my concept boards and colour pallets going forward.
The second brief for our studio is creating our own social enterprise and cafe, something which can fill a gap in the market, create an interesting, fun and colourful space and benefit the people around us.

As part of my research I thought would have a look at what kind of reading cafe’s already exist in London and the UK and what makes each of these spaces special.
Rays Jazz Cafe in Foyles Book Store, Charing Cross Road
Rays Jazz Cafe is a great little spot in London’s West End, with a laid back vibe its a great place to listen to some mellow melodies and read a good book.
The Barbican Conservatory, Moorgate
Whilst not a conventional library, the Barbican Conservatory is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of London. There are few more creative places to pass time at than the Barbican. The Cafe in the centre of the Conservatory is a great place to unwind, where you can enjoy your book surrounded by a tropical haven of over 2,000 species of plants and trees.
London Review Bookshop, Holborn
One of London’s best-loved book shops doubles up as social space, with plenty of literary events and debates. Located within a stone’s throw of the British Museum, it is crammed with books, thoughts and inspiration without seeming overly intellectual. And the cake shop – touted as “the modern answer to London’s long-lost literary coffee-houses”
The British Museum reading room, Bloomsbury
Built in 1857, this beautiful centrepiece of The British Museum has inspired many – including Alfred Hitchcock, who used it as one of his sets for 1929 thriller Blackmail. Now used as an exhibition space, you’re still likely to find a quiet corner to read in amid very regal surroundings.
Canada Water Library, Southwark
Located in the old Surrey Commercial Docks in Canada Water is is the Canada Water Library. The space is dynamic with a spiral staircase leading up to a bright, airy top floor filled with books (and a cafe below). “Libraries still hold these magic realms of invention, realms of ideas,” says architect Piers Gough. Definitely worth stopping by with a good book in hand.
During last Fridays lesson we started to look at design and visualisation by creating case studies of different design and brand elements that help to bring a concept to life. In a sense getting inside the head of the designer that created it and looking at all of the key elements that create a strong brand. A vital part of this is exploration, observation and analysis

As my main focus is café and bakeries as I continue researching for my brief with Oh Gee, Pie! I looked at local places in the area around the uni (Luckily East London is a fantastic place to find great cafés!) I started my search there.
One of the first places I visited was Exmouth Coffee Co, they had a really rustic feel to their establishment, which I loved. They made use of wooden menus and boards re enforcing the rustic, country feel to the café. They also sold different coffees in pastel coloured paper packages and the back wall was completely covered in small drawings and messages left by customers and stuck to the wall with their own branded stickers.
Bellboi is another small café with a selection of coffees and cakes. What first struck me about this hidden gem was the outside if the shop, which is beautifully illustrated (I’m told the artwork is by a local artist) and the matching coffee cups with the same design! A great way of advertising the café and keeping a consistent and cohesive design concept.
My favourite place was definitely Dark Sugars Chocolates, as you walk through the door you are greeted by a beautifully illustrated botanical menu on a chalk board. The design concept for the shop is definitely natural with the importance on the cocoa plant (one of two shops on Brick Lane BTW J) The walls are different shades of brown and gold and just ooze luxury whilst the handcrafted chocolates are displayed in enormous sea shells on wooden stands. I was also thrilled to see artwork on display and for sale by local artists in the area!
Chocolate, coffee and artwork… What more could you want?!
